People in Sandwich are being asked to suggest a name for the tower tours which will soon be available in St Peter’s Church.
Work to transform the landmark has been going on since the beginning of the year.
The grade I listed church is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), the national charity protecting historic churches at risk, and this project will see a staircase built inside the tower, which will allow visitors to enjoy fantastic views over the medieval town.
The CCT is now asking for help in naming the tower tours by launching a Title for the Tower competition.
Director for the South East Peter Aiers said: “We’re really excited that work is progressing on our project at St Peter’s Church.
“We think that the new tower access for visitors will really put the church on the map, but we need the help of local people in coming up with a memorable name for the tower tours – one that really captures the essence of the experience.”
The new visitor experience will help to tell the fascinating stories of the church, uncover its unique history and allow visitors to enjoy the spectacular views.
Suggested names should be short, snappy and fun, but also be descriptive of the tower tour experience.
The closing date for entries is Friday, April 8, and the winning name will be used on all marketing materials, including leaflets, website and banners.
The winner will receive a VIP guided tour of the church and tower and also a hamper of Kentish food and drink goodies.
The church already welcomes thousands of visitors each year but it is hoped this development will secure its sustainable future. The tower tours and new visitor experience are due to open in July 2016.
Entries can be sent to southeast@thecct.org.uk or tweeted to @SandwichStPeter.
