A HGV driver got a little more than he bargained for when taking a short cut through Sandwich on Tuesday.

The double transporter was driving down King Street when it became tangled in the Christmas lights and crashed into the electric box at Brewers Shoe Shop.

It happened at around 10.30am and took all the Christmas lights out.

Julie Howard, owner of Brewers said: “He got himself caught in the lights and took the electric box out on the side of our building.”

She said luckily the driver stopped but it still caused significant damage.

The lights in King Street, Market Street and Delf Street were affected.

It is hoped they will be put back up by Saturday.
