Plans to demolish a building and build a replacement two-storey science block at Sandwich Technology School have taken a step closer to being agreed.

Sandwich Town Council said it had no objection to the building, which consists of eight classes and one laboratory at the school on Deal Road.

Plans, available on the district council’s online planning portal, show that four classrooms are proposed on each floor, and the laboratory would be built on the first floor.

The structure would include red brick, natural timber cladding, grey aluminium windows and horizontal zinc cladding.

Project manager Ian Titherington of Diocesan Architects in Faversham said: “The school has looked to create links with Discovery Park and Pfizer for this project.”

KCC development planner Richard Smith said Kent Highway Services had noted the new build would not accommodate increased numbers of staff or pupils so no extra parking was required for school hours, but the building would also be used for adult education for which extra spaces might be needed.

Mr Smith has asked for clarification of how many spaces might be needed.

He added: “It should also be noted that access for demolition and construction activities will need to be from Deal Road, bearing in mind the amount of on-street parking taking place in Dover Road and the location of the building within the site.”

So far only one public comment has been logged. Anthony McCully said: “Overall, it is a good scheme with a bold but contextual design.”

The application will be decided by Dover District Council’s planners, with the possibility that it might be discussed by the planning committee.
