Kent golfers missed out on a place at The Open in the final qualifying round at Prince’s on Tuesday.

The top three from the four UK qualifiers gained a place at the prestigious tournament at Carnoustie later this month.

Rochester & Cobham Park’s Jack Colegate missed out on a place by one shot as he finished tied fourth and was level par after his two rounds.

The qualifier was won by Tom Lewis from Welwyn Garden City on four-under-par. Magnus Haraldur came second on two-under-par and South African Retief Goosen took the final place on one-under-par.

Anthony Tarchetti, from Prince’s, ended tied 12 with a two-over-par after 36 holes.

Royal Cinque Ports’ Steven Tiley ended the two round on five-over-par and in tied 16th while Warren Bennett, of Chestfield, was tied 23rd on six-over-par.

In tied 41st was Kings Hill’s Tom Sherreard with an 11-over-par.

Two-time US Open champion Goosen was one of three players to finish under-par at Prince’s as winds of more than 20mph made conditions tricky for players.

Goosen said: “I am glad it played tough today as I play better when it is difficult. I drove the ball well and my long putting in the wind was good.

“This will be my last Open as a regular tour player — next year I’ll be with the seniors — but I’m looking forward to it.

“Carnoustie is always tough but I’m sure it will be in great condition. Hopefully, it wouldn’t be as windy as today.”
