Young guns show the way at Sandwich 10k

The Sandwich 10k returned on Sunday with a new route.

It was still a flat course - good news for runners - but now started and finished at Sir Roger Manwood’s School and included a loop of the town centre.

Runners then headed along the river and down to Sandwich Bay before returning to the finish.

Youngsters dominated the top three places with Charlie Brisley, 19, winning the race in 31min 25sec, followed by 20-year-olds Cole Gibbens (33.26) and William Knight (33.43).

The experienced Alan Wood - a veteran in comparison at 35 - took fourth place in 34.32, with James Lane-Pitcher fifth in 35.12.

Making up the top 10 were: Lee Hardie 36.10, Sam Lewis 36.19, fastest woman Rebecca Weston 36.21, Ben Hall 36.51 and Trevor Kay 36.59.

Renata McDonnell, 21 years Weston’s senior at 47, finished second female in 39.34, followed by 56-year-old Elspeth Turner in 39.36. Completing the top 10 women were: Abigail Carwell 40.00, Annabel Carter 40.08, Ruby Spencer 40.48, Kerstin Sung 41.45, Rhian Dawes 42.10, Sarah Hall 42.57 and Abbie Kirkham 42.59.
