KENT golfer Robert McGuirk scored the biggest win of his career when he lifted the PokerMillion.Com Championship at Collingtree Park GC. d.
The 33-year-old professional from Sandwich produced a four-under-par round of 68 on the final day to claim the £10,000 first prize, finishing two shots in front of John Wade and Zane Scotland. His winning total was a nine-under-par total of 207.
McGuirk reaped the rewards for a consistent week at the Northampton course to win his first PGA Europro Tour event with scores of 69-70-68.
He said: "This was definitely the biggest win of my career. There was a field of 168, including several regular European Tour players who didn’t qualify for the BMW Championship at Wentworth, and so I am delighted."
Australian Wade, who had won the previous two EuroPro tournaments, fired a course-record 64 in his final round to put the pressure on with a seven-under-par target. Scotland, who had shot 67 on day two, hoped to force a play-off before bogeying the last hole, leaving McGuirk to hold his nerve and seal the victory.
After himself making a bogey on the 17th, McGuirk managed to find the island green at the final hole to record a par for the two-shot triumph.
He added: "When I arrived last week I liked the course straight away. My first two rounds were pretty steady. I didn’t make any mistakes really, but in the third round I was a bit all over the place during the first nine.
"But I knew if I got to 10 under I could win it and I got there at the 15th. When I last won at Prince’s in 2001, I three-putted and bogeyed the 17th and I did the same again this time!
Bill Howie, general manager of Prince’s, said: "We are all delighted at the club for Robert because he works so hard at his game."
