Juniors through to national cricket finals

Sandwich Juniors have battled their way through to the national finals of the Primary Schools Kwik Cricket Championships at Grace Road, Leicester on Monday.

By finishing runners-up in the Kent finals at Canterbury on Sunday, Sandwich qualified for the South East Regional finals at Regents Park in London the following day where they produced a tremendous performance against seven other teams from London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Sandwich finished second in their group to qualify for the semi-finals, where they defeated Pyrford PS from Surrey, before overcoming Maidenbower PS from Crawley in Sussex in the final.

Sandwich team manager Alistair Boniface said: “When you consider that around 2,500 primary schools in the south east region entered the competition, it’s a great achievement to have reached the national final. Although we have got one or two talented young cricketers, the key to our success has been the fact that the whole team, boys and girls, have worked so hard and they really deserve their success.”
