A van was left embedded in the front of a bank after a raider rammed it through the glass.
It driven into the wall of the Nationwide Building Society in Westerham, near Sevenoaks , at 4.50am this morning leaving a "substantial amount" of damage.
Police arrested a 26-year-old man from Croydon at the scene on suspicion of burglary.
A Kent Police spokesman said: "The incident is being investigated by detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate and enquiries are ongoing."
Mourdi Abdellah who works at Rendevouz Brasserie a few doors down said this is not the first time something like this has happened in the town.
He added: "I came in and it was all traffic and suddenly I realised what happened.
"It's similar to what happened eight years ago in Lloyds bank just around the coroner.
"I lived in London for years and I've not seen anything like this there, and here we are in a small quiet village and we have this.
"It's a bit scary because you never know what's next."
Officers have issued an appeal for witnesses.
