A driver has been airlifted to hospital after a serious crash which saw the A21 Sevenoaks bypass closed.

Firefighters freed two people trapped in a van after it left the road on the coastbound side, rolled down an embankment and hit a fence.

The driver was flown to a London hospital for urgent treatment while the passenger has been taken to the capital by ambulance.

Fire crews were called around 6.15am and the road was closed between the A25 (for Sundridge and Sevenoaks) and the A225 (Sevenoaks).

Kent Police officers were diverting traffic through Sevenoaks.

The road was shut earlier in both directions, but Kent's highways team says both carriageways are now open.

But there have been knock-on problems on the M25 with congestion building clockwise between junctions 4-5.

It comes as motorists trying to use the M20 between Borough Green and London face diversions as highways teams demolish the remains of a pedestrian bridge which collapsed last week.

Officers from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are urging anyone who may have seen the collision or who saw the van in the moments leading up to it, to get in touch.

The van is described as a white, Ford Transit Connect model with a yellow light on its roof. Officers would also like to contact the driver of a dark estate vehicle, which is believed to have been travelling closely behind the van.

Highways England is also urging drivers planning to use the Sevenoaks bypass to plan ahead and consider using alternative routes.
