Fire crews freed a driver left trapped in his vehicle after a crash on the M26.

The accident, involving a van and a car, happened at junction 2a at around 6.15pm, blocking the motorway.

Long tailbacks built up as firefighters freed the casualty, who was handed into the care of paramedics.

Four staff members from Galamast, a construction company based in Bromley, were the first on the scene.

The group opened the car door to allow smoke to escape the vehicle, and make room for another member of the public to help the casualty.

One of the witnesses, who does not wish to be named, describes running into the road to help, despite cars continuing to drive past at speed.

He said: "We're not looking for medals, we're just humble grounds workers.

"All we could see was smoke, and we didn't want anyone to burn to death."

Two fire engines attended and crews remained at the scene until just before 7pm, making sure the carriageway was clear of debris.
