A recording has emerged of an enormous thunderclap during an electrical storm in Kent which sounded like an explosion.
Jon Lane captured the moment on his home security camera in Edenbridge yesterday, at around 5.15am.
A dazzling flash of lightning is followed by an enormous rumble. Part of the estate lost power after the strike.
Mr Lane, a British Gas engineer, told KentOnline: "I was asleep as were my wife and two children, but we were awoken abruptly by the strike. We heard a few distant rumbles afterwards but nothing like what awoke us.
"I found the footage on my Hive security camera a few hours later and uploaded it to a local Edenbridge group.
"Within minutes people from all over Edenbridge were tagging relatives. Some commented saying they heard something and they thought it was an explosion or a gun shot.
"People were commenting saying that just watching the clip made them jump. "
'I've never heard anything like that before'
The 38-year-old added: "I've never heard anything like that before."
Many others across Kent took to Twitter to say they had been woken up by the storm.
One user said: "Wow that was loud thunder. No power now and the skies have opened with lightning", with another adding: "Big boom of thunder directly over the house and a minute later the six-year-old is at the bedroom door.
"It was 5.30am".
Fire crews were called to a house fire in Broadstairs after lightning hit the roof and more than 200 homes were left without power on Romney Marsh.
The thunderstorm came after a heatwave saw temperatures exceed 30C on Thursday, with thousands flocking to the coast, leading to major delays on the roads.
In contrast to the extremes of the week, however, the weekend is expected to remain drizzly and overcast, with temperatures failing to reach 20C.
