A kebab shop owner has been fined for fly-tipping bags filled with old food from his fast food business.

An eagle-eyed resident in Mill Pond Close, Sevenoaks, caught Hazim Saglam, dumping bags of rubbish on their road late at night in May last year.

They made a note of the registration plate and took photos of the bags on their mobile phone.

The information was sent to the Sevenoaks' council fly-tipping investigation team, which traced the number plate to Saglam - who owned Seal Kebab shop, in Church Street, at the time.

It changed hands at the beginning of January.

The 39-year-old, of Crown Hill, was also looking after 7Oaks Grill kebab shop in St John's Hill on behalf of his brother when it was dumped.

The business didn't have a commercial waste agreement when the offence happened.

When interviewed by the fly-tipping team in June, he confirmed he was the owner of the car.

At Sevenoaks Magistrates Court on Friday, January 17, Saglam was handed a £607 fine.

Cllr Margot McArthur, the council’s cabinet member for cleaner and greener, says: “Dumping waste, including food, is unpleasant and potentially dangerous. Business owners have a legal duty to dispose of their waste responsibly.

“We want to thank the local resident who witnessed this incident and provided us with crucial evidence so we could take action against Mr Saglam.

“We have promised our residents we will do our best to protect our environment and, where we have evidence, we will bring fly-tippers to justice.”
