An effigy of Liz Truss was burnt last night in one of Kent's most popular fireworks festivals.

The Edenbridge Bonfire Society revealed its celebrity Guy last week causing uproar among some who said it was "bullying" and "barbaric".

Every year since 1994, a 10m-tall celebrity effigy has been burnt as part of the celebrations.

The annual display near Sevenoaks took place last night at the town's recreation ground and saw the wooden figure of the former Prime Minister set alight.

Videos show visitors counting down before her head is exploded and fireworks burst out behind the smoking effigy to the soundtrack of DJ Fresh's Gold Dust.

The huge 'guy' depicted the Conservative MP holding a Guinness Book of World Records as the shortest-serving PM in the country's history, and a lettuce on her shoulder.

The lettuce was in reference to the Daily Star's 'Liz Truss Lettuce', in which the national newspaper shared a livestream of an iceberg lettuce that had outlasted her time as Prime Minister.

In the past, the celebrity effigy has taken the form of Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Katie Hopkins, Jonathan Ross, Katie Price, Wayne Rooney, Lance Armstrong, Gordon Brown, John Prescott, Anne Robinson and Saddam Hussein.

The society has been celebrating Bonfire Night for more than 90 years, and has been known to feature more than 750 people in its torch-lit parade through Edenbridge High Street.

The event begun at 6.30pm with the led by a choir and the society’s effigies of Guy Fawkes, General Wolfe and Anne Boelyn.

Edenbridge Bonfire Society has been approached for comment on last night's celebrations.
