A "small" number of staff and one pupil have tested positive for coronavirus at a Westerham school for children with physical disabilities and complex medical needs.

This comes after the school confirmed one case of the virus in the "school community" on Tuesday , but did not say if a student or staff member had tested positive.

Because of this development, and as a precaution, two more bubbles will be self-isolating, along with the two already staying at home. The four groups will be isolating until Friday, October 9.

Principal Roland Gooding said: “Following a single case of Covid-19 at the school we have now been made aware of a small number of further cases in staff and a student within the affected bubble.

"The outbreak is being robustly managed in liaison with Public Health England colleagues and Kent County Council. Students and staff in the affected bubble and one linked to it will now remain in isolation at home until Friday, October 9.

"As a precaution a further two bubbles have been isolated until the same date due to a health colleague having to enter the bubbles who has subsequently tested positive. No students or staff in these bubbles have developed any symptoms.

“The school is obviously very concerned for the people affected and is monitoring the situation very closely. Senior colleagues are in communication with parents.

“I would like to pay tribute to the diligent work of the staff and governors at Valence School and for that of Public Health England and local authority colleagues who are supporting us.

"The support and co-operation of our parents has also been exemplary and we would like to thank them at this anxious and difficult time.”
