A £1.8 million jewellery heist could have been carried out by a notorious robber police have dubbed “the Night Watcher”.

At least 50 items were stolen in broad daylight from a property near Wildernesse Golf Club in Sevenoaks in June.

A man escaped with a haul including rings, watches and pendants after attacking a woman with what appeared to be a handgun, police said.

CCTV was released last month showing a man on a train wearing a mask and distinctive red-soled trainers, who officers would like to identify.

Detectives have been hunting the “Night Watcher” since 2006.

The man, who is believed to be an ex-soldier, stakes out expensive properties, getting to know their layouts, the occupants' movements and where valuables are kept, police say.

Crimestoppers has pledged to give up to £10,000 to anyone who can provide information in relation to the violent incident in Sevenoaks.

The charity’s chief executive Mark Hallas said: “This was a shocking burglary that used violence and intimidation. Those involved could strike again.

“There will be people who know more about what happened but may be unwilling to come forward.

CCTV showed the suspect travelling on a train between Staplehurst and Sevenoaks on the morning of the attack.

After the burglary, he was seen on trains between Hildenborough, Tonbridge and Marden.

Shortly after 6pm, he was caught cycling in Staplehurst.

Both Crimestoppers and police have stressed that the man should not be approached if seen.

Rewards will only be offered for information that leads to the conviction of those responsible.
