AUTHOR Jeffrey Archer visited the Sevenoaks Literary Festival to talk about his life as a writer - and as a prisoner.
Lord Archer, jailed in July 2001 for perjury, spoke to an audience of more than 60 people at the Ship Theatre at Walthamstow Hall School.
After becoming a writer by chance with his first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, Lord Archer has drawn upon a host of life experiences in his work. He said: "Writing was just a God-given gift and has given me 30 years of happiness and privilege.
"I wrote down everything that happened while I was in prison and have some very frightening memories from when I was in Belmarsh where I lived with 23 murderers.
"During my time in the open prison I heard many stories because I was serving time with people convicted of fraud. But you never know whether they are telling you the truth!"
Since being released from prison Lord Archer has spent his time raising more than £2m in charity auctions and has also taken part in the London marathon
He said: "When I left prison I was frightened that I would not be able to speak again. I am living in a new world now and I'm really enjoying it."
Jill Webster, chairman of the festival said: "We were thrilled when Lord Archer said he would come along because he is such a popular writer. We also have a number of other stars including Penelope Lively and Candy Denman who will be appearing."
The literary festival continues until June 20 and tickets and a full programme of events are available from Sevenoaks Library, Buckhurst Lane. For more information contact 01959 524679.
