A bogus car buyer is reported to have stolen a car near Sevenoaks.
Officers are investigating allegations a man stole a vehicle in Dunton Green, after he had turned up at the seller’s home to take it for a test drive.
The victim had listed it for sale using a free classified ads website and on Saturday arranged for a potential buyer to view the car in Hillfield Road.
A man arrived claiming to be a mechanic, who was viewing the vehicle on behalf of the buyer and asked a number of questions about the car before then requesting a test drive.
The victim agreed and also got into the car before the man then claimed the boot was open.
When the victim exited the car to shut the boot, the man suddenly drove off at speed.
The suspect is described as being of Asian appearance and aged in his 20s or 30s.
He was around 6ft 4ins tall and slim, wearing dark clothing and black Reebok trainers.
before theft a suspicious white van was also seen in the road.
Sevenoaks Inspector Nick Finnis said: "Whilst this type of crime is extremely rare we would always advise people selling cars privately to exercise caution. If you are happy to let a buyer carry out a test drive, ask in advance for proof of insurance, a valid driver’s licence and passport, and a utility bill showing their home address.
"Alternatively conduct the test drive yourself. You can still demonstrate the vehicle pulls away, accelerates, steers and stops perfectly well to genuine buyers."
