Kent Police is warning Sevenoaks residents to protect themselves after a pensioner had almost £300 stolen from his wallet.

The 71-year-old was in a supermarket car park off the A225 Otford Roadwhen he was approached by a stranger.

During the incident, between 12.30pm and 1pm on September 18, he was asked if he had the number of a breakdown company and gave the man his membership card.

The suspect pushed the card back into the elderly man's wallet after making a telephone call.

It was only after the victim returned home from his shopping trip he realised £280 cash had gone missing.

Det Sgt Nick Finnis of Kent Police said: "I would urge people to be on their guard when approached by strangers, no matter how friendly they may appear.

"Unfortunately opportunist thieves latch onto vulnerable people and take advantage of those who are trustworthy and generous with their time.
