Two residents at a Sevenoaks care home pitted their wits against celebrity brainbox Shaun Wallace from the popular TV gameshow, The Chase, in an online quiz.
Clive Melsom, 71, and Alf Smallwood, 85, from Nesbit House Care Home at Badgers Mount joined forces with 18 other Hamberley Care Homes residents from across the UK in an attempt to outsmart The Chaser.
They put up a valiant effort, but Mr Wallace, nicknamed the Dark Destroyer, won after demonstrating his enormous general knowledge by correctly identifying the largest Canadian province as Nunavut, knowing that a vambrace was something that protected the arm in a medieval suit of armour and that Charlie Chaplin once came third in a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest.
Afterwards Mr Melsom said: “I really enjoyed taking part.
"I'm an avid fan of The Chase, I watch the show every night! So this was a dream come true, especially having the chance to meet Shaun Wallace!”
Mr Wallace said: “I was delighted to join so many wonderful people from various parts of the country for this brilliant quiz.
"Lockdown has been an enormous challenge for everyone, and I know it has been tough for many people who may not have seen their family and friends as much as they would like to."
He added: “But these kinds of virtual group activities prove to us that we can still have fun, smile and laugh together.
"They help us stay connected, stay mentally stimulated, stay social and prove we haven’t lost our sense of humour!”
Home manager, Charles Knowles, said: “We all enjoy watching The Chase and everyone wants to beat Shaun to the answer, and our contestants certainly gave him a hard time!
“We are so grateful to Shaun for his good humour and time."
Mr Wallace has featured in the British version of The Chase since 2009. He is a barrister and lecturer, and himself a former winner of BBC's Mastermind quiz show.
