A group of teens sprang into action to help a deer with a broken neck trapped in barbed wire.

Police were called shortly before 11.50am on Saturday after a dog walker discovered the animal in distress in Greatness Park in Sevenoaks.

Officers contacted Sheppey animal charity Kent Wildlife Rescue Service and volunteers arrived to find the deer with a broken neck.

Volunteer Vivien Smith said at the time: “Obviously some callouts are more distressing than others and [that] was particularly upsetting.

“It had barbed wire around its neck and we were surprised to find it was still alive.

“Our best guess is that it was running scared, couldn't get out beyond the railings, and got caught up in the barbed wire.

“I found some teenagers nearby who were excellent in their willingness to help.”

She said one of the boys told her he was “no stranger” to large wild animals and the group carried the deer across the park to the charity’s vehicle.

The deer was taken to Sevenoaks Vets but sadly had to be put down.

Vivien explained: “We are very grateful to the vet, Charlotte, for putting the poor creature out of its suffering.

“It was a strong animal and could have taken some time to die in agony if left.”

Charity runner Lorraine March said: “My team deals with an array of rescues, even the ones that we know can’t be helped other than reducing the suffering.

“All our teams are absolutely amazing, and your continued support helps us all keep going.”
