Edwardian life at Hever Castle near Edenbridge

Experience life at a grand country estate in the early 20 century this half term.

‘Edwardian Life’ takes place at Hever Castle & Gardens in Kent from May 23 – 31. The event for families gives a glimpse of the Edwardian era just before the First World War when the Astors were in residence.

Children can take part in an Edwardian school where old fashioned PE sessions will take place and the ‘three Rs’ of reading, writing and arithmetic will be taught each day in an old fashioned classroom complete with chalk and blackboard.

All the family can try their hand at traditional games of the period including a coconut shy, tin can alley and hoopla.

Join costumed golfers with traditional Edwardian clubs in a golfing challenge or enjoy a more leisurely game of croquet on the lawn.

Plus there’s a prize for the best dressed boy and girl each day for those who come in Edwardian costume.

Follow a quiz that takes you through the rooms of the Castle to learn about famous Edwardians.

Then discover the Astor family’s ‘rags to riches’ story in an interactive exhibition where interviews with former ‘below stairs’ staff can be listened to on old fashioned telephones.

Visitors can even watch the Astor’s rare archive collection of home movies on a 1930s TV set that brings the ‘upstairs, downstairs’ years vividly to life.
