As a result of new research, a local business has carried out an experiment in which a TV doctor and health expert experienced what it's like to be hard of hearing for a day.
Hidden Hearing, based in Maidstone, fitted well known TV doctor and health expert, Dr. Hilary Jones, with bespoke ear moulds - simulating the early stages of hearing loss.
The real issue the case hopes to highlight is the implications of ignoring the symptoms, including social isolation, links with dementia, and in some extreme cases, depression. It's estimated that 4 million people in the UK could benefit from a hearing aid but haven’t yet sought help, this experiment plans to spread awareness to the importance of seeking help.
Dr Hilary said: "As a GP I see people with hearing loss on a weekly basis and recommend regular hearing check-ups, just like eye tests and going to the dentist.
"Hearing loss can occur at anytime, but mainly affects people as they age, with it mostly affecting those aged 50 and over."
He added: "Losing your hearing is common and is likely to affect us all as we age. The important thing is to recognise it and don’t delay in seeking help. Being hard of hearing is a lonely and isolating place to be but it doesn’t have to be this way."
“My experience of being hard of hearing for a day was a very interesting one, and gave me an insight in to what it would feel like to be living with undiagnosed hearing loss.
"When patients come into my clinic with hearing loss I advise them ever more loudly to go and have an assessment and find a solution."
