Water was seen shooting 60ft into the air as contractors worked to fix a burst main outside a Kent railway station.

South East Water started repairs on the pipe, near Sevenoaks station in London Road, at about 11am today.

It is thought as many as 13 streets may have had their water supply affected, with the firm warning customers they could experience no supply or low pressure.

The company said: "We're really sorry to those of you without water or low pressure in the London Road area of Sevenoaks.

"This should only be for a short time while we complete our repairs."

By 12.30pm the issue had been fixed, with the firm telling customers their water should be flowing as normal again.

"If your water looks brown in colour, please don't worry as it's not harmful.

"This happens when small particles of iron within the mains are disturbed. Simple run from you cold kitchen tap until the water is clear."

Andy Beston, a regional networks manager for South East Water said: “We’re really sorry to motorists affected by our work to repair a leak on our equipment within London Road, Sevenoaks.

“This was a planned repair, and while our teams worked to fix the fault all customers continued to receive top quality drinking water to their taps.

“To ensure the safety of motorists and our teams undertaking this work the road has been closed and I urge motorists to follow the signed diversion route.

“We hope to be able to reopen the road on Tuesday (February 15) once it has been returned to normal.

“Once again, we are sorry for any disruption and would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding.”

The railway station remains open.

A large area of the road was cordoned off by barriers opposite Premier mini market and Gallery 88.
