Drivers were caught in standstill traffic for up to 90 minutes after a crash and vehicle fire on the M26 near Otford.
Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called to the scene of the incident involving three vehicles.
One of the cars caught fire after the collision, which happened just after 7pm.
Some of the people involved were treated for minor injuries.
The motorway was closed west-bound between junction 3 of the M20 and junction 5 of the M25.
It partially opened just before 9pm so trapped traffic could pass the scene and fully reopened at 5am today.
National Highways South East said emergency services were called to the scene of the "multiple vehicle collision", along with traffic officers to help with traffic management.
A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to the incident at around 7pm on Saturday 26 February 2022, and patrols attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service.
"Some of the vehicle occupants have received treatment for minor injuries.
"Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended to extinguish a fire in one of the vehicles.
"The westbound carriageway will remain closed while arrangements are made to recover the vehicles and motorists should consider alternative routes."
