Security devices in money bags thwart armed robber

A MAN walked into a building society in Kent and threatened staff with a handgun before making off with bags of money.

The robber entered the Bradford and Bingley Building Society, in London Road, Sevenoaks, on Friday at around 3pm and pulled out a handgun before demanding staff hand over the cash. He then ran off past South Park Medical Centre in South Park.

Police say that while he was getting away, security devices in the money bags activated, spraying purple dye over him and the cash. The man then dropped the money and carried on running.

Six passers-by people collected up the cash and handed it to police officers.

Det Sgt Richard Pringle, of Kent Police, said the man, who was white, in his mid 30s to 40s, about 5ft 8ins, and wearing a polo shirt, light-coloured trousers, baseball cap and golf glove, will be recognisable because he will have been stained by the dye.

No one was injured during the robbery.

Anyone with information should call police on 01732 379160 or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
