Chalk markings which could have been made by criminals to pinpoint burglary targets have been found outside homes in Shoreham.

Pink crosses have been reported in Church Street and the High Street and police say they have been in touch with homeowners to give them advice.

It is possible the markings have been left by children, or by some kind of prankster, but the force is urging residents to report them.

Sergeant James Joyce, of the Sevenoaks Community Safety Unit, said: “We do not want to alarm residents and there is no evidence at the moment to suggest the markings are an indication of anything sinister.

“However, it is important that people remain vigilant and ensure their homes are left properly secured when unattended.

“Residents should keep their eyes peeled for any marks or symbols which appear to have been deliberately left outside.

"If you do see anything suspicious take a photograph, wash the chalk away and call police immediately.

“Remember that by following a few simple steps you can greatly reduce the chances of being a victim of crime.

"Lock all windows and doors when you go out or before you go to bed and don’t leave keys or other valuables near doors or windows.

"We know that burglars look for easy targets, so where possible it is also worth investing in quality locks and alarms."
