A motorcyclist has died after a three-vehicle crash which saw the M25 shut in both directions near Sevenoaks.
Police are investigating the collision which happened not far from the Clacket Lane services, between junction 5 at Westerham and junction 6 at the A22 Godstone at about 5.30pm yesterday.
A Surrey Police spokesman said: "The collision, which is believed to have involved two cars and a motorcycle, occurred on the anti-clockwise carriageway between Junctions 5 and 6 around 5.30pm.
"Ambulance crews attended the incident but despite the best efforts of the paramedics, the motorcyclist, who is believed to be in his 30s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
"The air ambulance was also in attendance."
The M25 was eventually reopened at 2am.
After the crash all vehicles were held in both directions, with the M26 also shut to London-bound traffic.
Surrey and Kent Police attended, along with paramedics, fire crews and highways traffic officers.
Hundreds of drivers were caught within the closures, with the anti-clockwise trapped traffic released first.
By just before 7pm, clockwise traffic was also being released by filing past the crash site, although drivers were warned it would be "slow going".
Diversions are in place in both directions for traffic approaching the closures at junctions 5 and 6.
It was also reported that a broken down vehicle on the anti-clockwise side was blocking the inside lane of four near the Clacket Lane services.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw the vehicles being driven before the crash, or those with dashcam footage, should call 101 and quoting reference PR/P21080881.
