Coronavirus Kent: Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Malling parking attendants hand out food parcels rather than tickets

They are most commonly associated with heaping misery on motorists but some Kent traffic wardens have been given new roles in their community.

Parking officers from Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Malling are now delivering food parcels to vulnerable residents.

It comes after their respective councils announced they would be redeploying this section of the workforce to provide essential supplies.

Panic-buying and stricter lockdown measures have made it more difficult for certain members of the community to access what they need.

So far, with the support of wardens, around 150 food parcels have been delivered to isolated individuals in Tonbridge and Malling who lack family, friends or other support.

Local food suppliers such as the Punch and Judy pub and Albion Fine Foods, both in Tonbridge, have donated goods to the effort.

They have been backed by national retailers including Sainsbury's and Poundland who have thrown their weight behind the campaign with dried goods, ready meals and even Easter eggs.

Tonbridge and Malling council’s senior civil enforcement officer, Sophie Smith, said: “I love my day job but this is really rewarding work and it certainly makes a change to be doing something that brings a smile to people’s faces.

"Many of these people live alone so they really appreciate the help but also the chance for a quick chat as they often have no one to talk to while they are in isolation.”

Sevenoaks council says its meter attendants are now on hand to help with a range of tasks.

These ranges from shopping and picking up prescriptions to dog walking or even just a friendly phone chat.

Sevenoaks Cllr Lesley Dyball, said: “In these uncertain times, we are taking on new roles to support older and vulnerable residents who cannot leave the house during the coronavirus outbreak.

"I am really proud that our traffic wardens have stepped up to provide a lifeline to those in greatest need.”

The council was keen to stress the redeployment did not mean parking anywhere was now fair game.

It added wardens will continue to make limited patrols, ensuring drivers park safely and responsibly and to ensure enough space is left for emergency vehicles.
