Anton Matusevich has won his opening two Classic Week matches at the UK Pro Series tennis tournament.
The 19-year-old British no.20 has channelled his inner computer boffin in lockdown and says he loved swapping deuces for data science at his Sevenoaks home.
“I was doing a data science course so a lot of mathematics, while I really enjoyed machine learning and coding as well,” he said.
“Even on an intermediate level I think it's a key skill these days with technology getting more advanced - I like the statistics and the pure mathematics side, and for plotting graphs and dealing with massive data sets.”
He’s toyed with the idea of coding when his tennis career ends but is only focused on lifting trophies, not cracking data conundrums.
“Right now let me focus on this tournament, as I really want to win this one!” he added.
His tennis is going well too. In the round-robin format at St George's Hill Lawn Tennis Club, Weybridge, he toppled Dan Cox on Monday followed by Mark Whitehouse on day two.
Matusevich is one of 24 leading players duelling it out in the widely-billed Premier League of tennis.
The innovative format was devised by Andy Murray’s coach, Jamie Delgado, with players on Classic Week being split into two boxes of six ahead of finals weekend on August 15th and 16th.
And the precocious young star from Kent looks well-placed to challenge for the inaugural tournament title, having notched two wins from two on the indoor courts heading into the business end of the week.
The UK Pro Series is a new tennis tournament aimed at giving an opportunity to British tennis players to compete domestically.
