Praise and plaudits for their FA Cup run will count for nothing if Sevenoaks don’t pick up maximum points in the league on Wednesday night.

That’s the verdict of Sevenoaks boss Harry Hudson as his team play only their sixth Isthmian South East game of the season at home to Corinthian.

The club reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history, bowing out 2-0 at Ebbsfleet at the weekend.

“It's been brilliant to put us on the map, I hope,” reflected Hudson. “It’s great for the board and supporters as they deserve success. It’s a beautiful, fantastic community asset as a football club.

“There are financial benefits in the FA Cup which are great but, ultimately, we’ve got ambitions in our league this year and we are falling way short of those at the moment.

“To be fair we haven’t been able to have any rhythm in the league and are way behind on our fixtures because of the brilliance of the cup runs but ultimately our season starts on Wednesday.

“We can be great going to Ebbsfleet and put in a good performance, but if we don’t go and win three points on Wednesday night it’s worth absolutely nothing.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down and assess the injured bodies because if we show that level of performance and organisation in step 4 then we’ll have a good season. I’d have rather drawn most Step 1 teams than Ebbsfleet away. If we can make them look a little bit lost with the football at times then we should be fine at step 4.”

Sevenoaks have as many as four games in hand on the sides above them but haven’t won in the league since mid-August.

It will be their first league outing for a month, with Hudson knowing they’ve got plenty of time to improve on a mixed opening and live up to their pre-season billing of promotion candidates.

“I’m a very ambitious manager,” he said. “The club deserves to be out of step 4, it’s a very tough league, the South East division is always the strongest and there’s some good sides in it.

“Our results haven’t quite gone for us this year but we’ve only performed poorly in one game, and that was against Chatham. We lost at Ashford and anyone who watched that will tell you it was the most ludicrous thing that we didn’t score in that game.

“We had VCD in our last league game when we hammered the door down and we equalised, and their player was five yards offside but the linesman never gave it and we lost 2-1. This season unfortunately things haven’t gone for us but they will even themselves out.

“There’s a lot of football to play in our league, we’ve got 33 games left. Hastings won the league last year losing 10 games so there’s a lot of football to be played. It’s not ideal to play catch-up but also you can get a bit of momentum and games come thick and fast when you want them to.

“Our objective is to start that on Wednesday and kick on from there.

“The players did the club proud but let’s put the FA Cup to bed now and focus on what we can control which is our league performance.”
