Dozens of people enjoyed a leisurely walk along the seafront to watch the sun setting and raise money for charity.

The five-mile Fun for Life Sunset Seaside Stroll took place on Saturday to support Cancer Research UK.

Sixty-seven people left The Leas, Minster, at 8pm after a minute’s silence and ribbon cutting.

They made their way to Queenborough where there was music at the Old House at Home pub by Bender Crack Corn.

Sheppey FM and Restoration Youth provided drink stations along the route and more than £700 was raised for the charity.

Candle bags lit the last leg from the Lappel Bank to Crundells Wharf and specially dedicated lanterns were set out near the finish line.

Chairman Lee Ewart said: “I’m really happy with the way the stroll has been received by everyone – I’ve heard nothing but positives so far and people have said they are looking forward to it next year.

“Those who dedicated lanterns did a great job in decorating them and the plain ones that lined the wall looked amazing.

“The sun did us proud setting so beautifully and I don’t think we could have had a better night – weather-wise it was perfect.

“I would like to thank all those who helped out – Richard Jeferies, Paul Wright, Sheppey EMUs, Sheppey St John Ambulance, Restoration Youth and Sheppey FM.

“The Fun For Life committee has now started planning next year’s event, which we are hoping will be bigger and better.”

The committee will be at the Co-op Sports and Social Club in St George’s Avenue, Sheerness, on Sunday, September 1, from midday to 3pm for people to pay in their sponsorship money.

Everyone who took part is invited to a presentation evening on Friday, September 20.
