A very special birthday

Little Oliver Smith has had one of the best birthday presents possible.

The youngster, who turned four yesterday, is battling cancer and Islanders have raised more than £80,000 for treatment he could need.

Not only did he have a new hearing aid fitted this week, but his family also received news that one of his two remaining tumours has gone.

Mum Natalie Smith said they had a really lovely day celebrating.

“After everything he has been through and the things that I have seen, we never knew whether he was going to reach this birthday,” she added. “It’s been a nice day for a special birthday.”

Test results which he received last week unexpectedly revealed that a tumour in his leg has disappeared.

When Oliver was originally diagnosed with neuroblastoma, he had five tumours.

He had surgery to remove one in his stomach and at the top of his kidney, and chemotherapy got rid of one in his pelvis. But he still had two remaining in his head and leg.

His family went to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London on Wednesday for the results of a scan he had last month.

After tests at the beginning of the year showed no changes in the two remaining tumours, Oliver’s mum Natalie had hoped the news would be the same this time. But it was even better and they were told the tumour in his leg has gone completely.

“We just couldn’t stop smiling afterwards,” said Natalie, of Coral Road, Minster.

“We thought it would be the same – that they hadn’t changed.

“We stopped at Toys ‘R’ Us on the way home to celebrate.

“It’s such a weight off to know it’s gone. It could happen with the other one but we just don’t know.”

Oliver had his hearing aids fitted on Monday and yesterday he had a visit from Kent Association for the Blind to carry on his training with how to use a cane.

He lost all the sight in his left eye and most of the vision in his right eye due to tumours.

If the session is successful Oliver, who goes to Woodlands Day Nursery in Minster, will start using the cane all the time.

Meanwhile, a fund set up to raise money for treatment he could need has been added to.

A collection box in the Times Guardian office was emptied and there was £58 inside. This means Islanders have now raised £86,582 for the Oliver Smith Appeal.
