Ab Fab: Inventor's hilarious pitch to get Dragons toned

Duncan Bannatyne and his fellow millionaires are not used to people admitting they "don't have a clue" when pitching their ideas.

But that was the approach a Sheerness businessman took when he brought his invention into the Dragons' Den.

Glen Harden certainly made an impression on the Dragons, and his appearance on the show has been dubbed the funniest pitch ever on YouTube.

Mr Harden, of Windmill Court, Sheerness, went on the BBC show to try to get backing for his UV Body Sculpture - a selective tanning system using screens.

The screens are placed strategically on the torso while the user is on a sun bed or in natural light for a tanned and toned look.

It is billed as a way to "get instant abs" and Mr Harden took his 20-year-old son Glen along as a model.

Dad-of-four Mr Harden took the unusual approach of going on the show with no business plan, no potential sales and no facts and figures.

But what he did have was bags of confidence and enough humour to make all the Dragons laugh.

The 52-year-old, who owns Windsor Fitted Furniture in New Road, said he came up with the idea for selective tanning after observing the "ridiculous marks" people had on them after falling asleep in the sun.

He said: "I thought you must be able to harness that and make something better so I started developing it.

"It's amazing what you can do with light and shade."

He started work on it 20 years ago and has owned the patent for 14 years, but since then the screens have been locked away gathering dust.

It was only when he wrote out a cheque to renew the patent that he decided to try to do something with it.

Mr Harden admitted he was nervous before going on the show but thinks it went quite well.

"I know a little bit about business but this was as much a hobby as anything else," he said.

"I didn't have time to prepare properly but it was good fun.

"It's not a joke product, it works very well and is totally serious.

"If you have two sun beds - one which makes you tanned and one which makes you tanned and toned - which one are you going to use?"

None of the Dragons invested but it has not put Mr Harden off.

He said that since his appearance he had had lots of tanning shops interested in the screens and he now plans to start emailing round to see what feedback he gets.

Some classic lines from Glen's appearance on Dragons' Den included:

  • To sell his product to the Dragons, Mr Harden said: "I have got no sales figures to talk to you about, no book work whatsoever, but what I do have is a potential target market that I think is colossal, because who wouldn't want to look a little bit better for £20?"
  • When Duncan Bannatyne commented how natural Glen's abs looked and asked if they were real, his dad replied that he had absolutely no abs and no definition, which caused a stir among the Dragons. Duncan replied: "So he's a fat boy?"
  • Deborah Meaden said Mr Harden was charming but she would not for one second consider investing in him unless he could offer more than something that was locked away for 20 years.
  • Mr Harden said he had no clue about a business plan, which Deborah said was an unusual and high-risk approach.
  • New Dragon Hilary Devey said she honestly thought he could be on to something but encouraged him to get out there and sell it.
  • Theo Paphitis summed up his appearance saying: You've been refreshing, you've been honest- but I'm out."
  • When Mr Harden was interviewed at the end of the show, he said he thought the Dragons missed a trick by not investing because he believed in the product. He finished by saying: "Duncan started the ball rolling trying to be the funny guy but you have to get up pretty early in the morning to be funnier than me and, unfortunately, he didn't get up early enough."
