Island pupils have been finding out their exam results today.

At the Oasis Academy, 22 students sat A levels in six subjects.

Some 97% of them achieved an A*-E grade, a 1% increase from last year.

Nine learners received A*-C grades. A total of 65 teenagers undertook BTEC examinations in 13 subjects.

All BTEC candidates received merit, distinction, or distinction*, which are A-level equivalent.

Overall these results are up 13% on last year with 71% of Year 13 having achieved qualifications at A level, BTEC equivalent (to A Level) or a combination of both.

A total of 19 students took a total of 41 AS level exams, recording 93% A to E grades – a 14% improvement from 2015.

The academy’s best achievers included Holly Neal, Georgina Sherriff, Alexander Forster, Thomas Jupe and Ella Boots.

Holly achieved four A levels – including an A in sociology, B in history and C grades in psychology and English.

Before going to university, She is taking a year out to work at another Oasis Academy.

Georgina achieved maths B/further maths B/two distinction* in music and one distinction* in science.

After gap year she hopes to pursue her ambition to be an accountant.

Alexander achieved three A levels including B grades in history and sociology and will read history at university next year.

Talented engineer Thomas achieved double distinction* in engineering alongside his maths A level. He has secured a place on an engineering course at the University of Greenwich.

Ella achieved distinction* in applied science and information, communication and technology alongside her A level in English. She will pursue undergraduate studies in the health sector.

Georgina, 18, of Minster, squealed with delight as she opened her envelope.

She said: “I have done much better than I expected. The road ahead is still a little cloudy. I’m not 100% sure what I’ll do.

“But if it’s anything like this envelope, it’s going to be good!” One of her choices is a career in public relations.

She added: “I’ve been at the Academy since Year 7. “There have been a lot of changes but I think all of them have been pretty good.

“They must have been pretty good for me to get this, mustn’t they!”

She praised her teachers and said: “I owe a big thanks to Mr Slater who in Year 11 let me do music as an option, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to do it in sixth form. I didn’t pick it as one of my original options.

“There was only one other girl who picked an additional option in Year 11.

She chose PE. If Mr Slater hadn’t given me the go-ahead I wouldn’t have been able to have done it now.”

She added: “I sing and can bash my way around a guitar but I prefer notation and composing and arranging.”

Her proud mum Kim, who works as a data manager at the Academy, said: “A lot of very positive things are happening at the Academy.

“It is certainly going in the right direction. My son came here, too, and did very well in his A-levels.”

Minster resident Alex Forster, 18, was celebrating three A-levels including B grades in history and sociology and a D in English.

He said: “I am pretty satisfied with the results. I am going to Canterbury Christ Church University to study history and then I hope to become a teacher.

“I have loved history from an early age and have always loved reading books.

“The teachers here have been really important in developing my interest, too.

“In fact, my entire experience at the academy has been phenomenal.”

Holly, who lives in Sittingbourne, achieved four A-levels including an A in sociology, B in history and C grades in psychology and English.

She said: “In the meantime I’m going to do a bit of travelling around Europe and perhaps America. The results were better than I expected.”

Associate principal John Cavadino said: “This was a great day celebrating our best-ever A-level results which have increased by 14%.

“We have 71% of pupils who have left with the equivalent of three A-levels.

“I am very proud of our fantastic students and dedicated staff who have worked so hard over the past two years to make this day such a success.”
