One person was air-lifted to hospital after a four-car-crash closed a road for nearly three hours on the Isle of Sheppey.
The A2500 Lower Road between Cowstead Corner and Barton Hill Drive at Minster was shut from just after 1pm this afternoon (Monday, May 10) and not reopened to traffic until 4pm. Vehicles heading off the Island were diverted through Halfway and Sheerness leading to gridlock and huge delays.
Police, fire and ambulance rushed to the scene. A spokesman for South East Coastal Ambulance said: "We were there alongside the air ambulance service.
"Two patients were taken to hospital for further treatment. One was airlifted to King's College Hospital, London, with serious injuries and the second was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital."
Two fire crew were also at the scene for more than an hour. A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We were called to assist police following reports of a crash involving four cars in Lower Road, Minster-on-Sea.
"Two fire engines attended and crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to release one casualty, who was passed into the care of paramedics."
One motorist struck in traffic on the Sheppey Way trying to get to Minster said at the time: "The Lower Road is gridlocked. Traffic is snarled up everywhere. Everyone is now having to go via Halfway or Sheerness. The queue starts at the Aviator pub."
Two car transporters took the four cars away just before 4pm. They included a Toyota, Lexus and a BMW.
A police spokesman said: "We were called at 1.13pm to a collision reported to involve four vehicles in Lower Road, Minster.
"Officers attended alongside Kent Fire and Rescue Service, South East Coast Air Ambulance and Air Ambulance Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
"One person was taken to a London hospital for treatment and a road closure was enforced. The closure was lifted by around 3.50pm."
