Tributes to the late Betty Pye have been arriving at her home in Foxley Road, Queenborough.
The 82-year-old lost her fight against kidney cancer at the Wisdom Hospice early last Wednesday.
She and husband Ted had celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary the previous day.
She was a fighter to the end. Even after diagnosis, she continued to work as an invigilator at the Oasis Academy, and was still much involved in the community.
If there was one area she felt she made a real difference, it was as chairman of the Queenborough Society.
Her year as the town mayoress – supporting Ted in 2000 – was of immense pride as were her duties as governor of Queenborough Primary School.
She loved working with young people and in her former south London home had been part of a youth training scheme.
In 1966, she, black cab driver Ted, daughter Marie and mother Bet O’Connor, came to Sheppey to take over the running of the White House at Minster.
After six years, she moved on to manage Bell Farm Holiday Park, Minster.
Already leading a busy life, she joined the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service delivering meals on wheels in the Leysdown and Eastchurch areas.
Daughter Marie has followed her parents in playing a community role as a councillor in Waltham Forest, east London.
Betty leaves husband Ted, Marie and two much-loved grandsons Simon and Toby.
The funeral will be held at noon on Maundy Thursday, April 2, at the Garden of England Crematorium, Bobbing.
Family flowers only. Donations, if wished to the Wisdom Hospice.
