A fun day has raised more than £1,000 for a hospital unit which cares for premature and sick babies.

It was held at the Bay View pub in Leysdown Road, Leysdown, in aid of the Oliver Fisher Special Care Baby Trust at Medway Maritime Hospital.

There was a sponsored golf competition to start the fundraising at Upchurch River Valley Golf Course, and the participants then returned to the Sheppey venue for darts contests, bottle-top bingo, raffles, karaoke and a charity auction.

Landlord Miguel Garcia raised more money by being paid to sing and there was an “Elvis-off” singing competition. Altogether it raised £1,003.

The fun day came about after retired Bay View resident George Heath said he wanted to raise money on behalf of 20-year-old Joseph Peaurt, who is disabled.

His mother Caron, from Minster, said she wanted to donate it to the unit, which looked after her son for three months when he was born.

Joseph presented the money to the unit’s fundraising officer, Lindsey Wileman.

Ms Peaurt said: “The unit is very special to so many families. Without it, Joe would not have survived.

“I would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone involved and to those who went along for making it such a successful day, and thanks to Mr Heath and the landlords Miguel and Jayne Garcia.”
