Police are appealing for information after an attempted robbery in Sheerness yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

The incident took place just before 5.10pm as two men in their 60s walked along Strode Crescent.

As they turned into Newcomen Road they were approached by two men aged between 20 and 25 who sprayed them in the face with an aerosol can, believed to be hair spray.

Sgt Neil Kimber of the Area Crime Unit said: "We think the intention was robbery but before any threats could be made the two victims managed to fight off their assailants, who then made off on foot down Newcomen Road towards Alma Road."

Police officers were in attendance within a few minutes and the two victims were treated at the scene by South East Coast Ambulance Service staff.

Sgt Kimber said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time or may recognise the description of these two men.

"This incident took place at a busy time of day and I feel sure that someone must have seen the two offenders acting suspiciously either beforehand or afterwards.

"Fortunately in this case the two victims managed to fight off their assailants and came away unscathed.

"I am glad to say that crimes like this are not common but when they do happen we take them very seriously and are conducting an extensive investigation in order to bring the offenders to justice.""
