A much-loved pub has closed down and been put up for sale after “ever-increasing” bills forced it out of business.

The Aviator pub, on Queenborough Road, Minster, Sheppey, broke the news over Facebook today, prompting an outpouring of messages from customers.

“We are now closed permanently, thank you for your custom,” wrote the pub’s owners.

“Unfortunately, the ever-increasing utilities have made things impossible to continue.

“We’ve had some great times at The Aviator but all good things come to an end.”

The Queenborough Road pub was well-known for its good food, cheerful staff and for annually hosting the Sheppey beer festival.

Commenting on the post, the pub manager confirmed that the future of the building was uncertain as it has been put up for sale.

The announcement attracted over 200 reactions and scores of comments from fans of the long-standing community hub, who praised its tasty food and cheerful customer service.

“So sad we have had some amazing meals there,” remembered one customer.

Formerly known as the Lady Hamilton, the establishment re-opened as The Aviator in 2007 and had grown to be a popular place for Sunday roasts, fry-up breakfasts and special events.

In May 2020, brewery Shepherd Neame tried to adapt to shifting dining trends in the area by converting an outside bar in the car park into a drive-thru.

Aviator’s general manager Kevin Burgess joked at the time that it would be “the world's first McAviator”.

The following year the pub evolved again to become a fully-licensed wedding venue and hosted marriage celebrations with over 150 guests.

Also reacting to the Facebook post were many people who associate the establishment with key moments in their lives.

“Very sad to hear this news as it is where my boyfriend and I enjoyed our first date. Always makes me smile when I drive past,” remarked one Facebook user.

“Such a shame. You hosted our wedding breakfast and baby shower and have been absolutely amazing, you will be sorely missed,” added one more.

Comments section sadly reflected on how unfortunate economic conditions had led to the downfall of another treasured dining establishment.

“It's always sad to read that the island is losing another fantastic venue, not due to commitment the owners put into it but the extortionate overheads,” said one social media user.

“Sad times. Some of the best meals we’ve had here. The island loses everything good it has,” lamented another.
