A Sheppey watering hole has been named Kent's Pub of the Year - as well as one of the top 16 pubs in Britain.

The Admiral's Arm, in Trafalgar Square, Queenborough, picked up the award from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

It sent representatives from around the county to the micropub to judge it on categories such as quality of beer, welcome, atmosphere, cleanliness, service and overall impression.

Following the unannounced, anonymous visits it was declared the champion. It went up against the 10.50 from Victoria, in Strood, Medway, to win the Kent prize.

They went head to head after completing the heats for their areas.

Owner Chris Collier said: "We are delighted to have been recognised by CAMRA as Kent Pub of the Year.

"It’s great that our hard work and passion has paid off. We would like to thank our team and our customers as we couldn’t have done it without them."

It has also been revealed as one of the top 16 in Britain in the search for the next National Pub of the Year.

Swale CAMRA branch chairman, John Sissions, said: "I'm over the moon my friends Chris and Rachel Collier have achieved this accolade after less than three years of trading.

"I was involved when the suggestion was originally made to open a pub and what a superb job they have made of this venture.

"I'm sure there will be a beer or two consumed in celebration of this event.

"As far as I'm aware this is yet another first for Sheppey.

"Never has one of the Island's pubs progressed higher than branch level.

"The award is testament to the work the team has put in since opening and that includes every member of staff past and present along with the people behind the scenes that keep up the maintenance."

The pub also offers a menu for drinkers, including pizzas.
