A mother has spoken of her pride after her 10-year-old son raised more than £2,600 for a Kent hospital.

Harvey Servante begged his mum, hairdresser Gemma, to chop off his locks in order to bring in cash for Medway Maritime Hospital.

The youngster, from Minster, Sheppey, smashed his original goal of £100 for the hospital's intensive care unit, after setting up a fundraising page on Good Friday.

He finally had his hair cut yesterday.

Gemma said: "His auntie works at Medway hospital where she's a clinical support worker in critical care.

"She's in the thick of it at the moment and that's had an impact on Harvey so it's quite worrying for him.

"He kept asking me to shave his head because I'm a hairdresser and a few of his friends also had their heads shaved.

"He had a lovely mop of highlighted hair and he said he would do it for charity which is when I agreed.

"He really likes it. He couldn't get over how it looked and felt when he was washing it yesterday."

So far he has raised more than £2,620.

"It's amazing, we're completely blown away," added Gemma.

"We just can't thank everyone enough and every time we checked the total over the weekend it kept going up."

Plans for how the money could be used have not been revealed yet but it is thought it could go towards equipment used to keep patients in touch with their families.
