A Sheppey businessman has donated hundreds of pounds to help keep housebound elderly people up-to-date with local news.

Alan Doucy, managing director of Sharrocks Insurance, has arranged for 100 copies of the Sheerness Times Guardian to be delivered each week to users of Age UK Sheppey’s home care service for three weeks.

The charity has temporarily closed its day centres at Rosemary House, Sheerness, and Roxeth in Leysdown, due to the coronavirus outbreak, but its home delivery service is still up and running.

Mr Doucy, who is also chairman of Age UK Sheppey, said: “In these unsettling times, it’s important we do what we can to support the most vulnerable in our community.

“I hope our Age UK Sheppey clients will appreciate this small gesture to bring them local and county information from a trusted news source.”

Mr Doucy, whose business operates from the Sheerness windmill, off High Street, added: “I urge everyone to follow government advice to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.

Chief officer Kerry Moore, staff and volunteers have been delivering two-course meals to residents across the Island. They can also offer frozen meals and snack packs.
