A driver who fled from police in a stolen car at speeds exceeding 100mph has been jailed.

Harrison Bennett, of no fixed address but formerly of Minster, Sheppey, hurled glass bottles from a car and drove on the wrong side of the road during a police chase last year.

Officers had spotted the 29-year-old driving an Audi with cloned number plates in Sheerness High Street at about 7pm on December 13.

Attempts were made to stop the car, but Bennett sped off, driving at more than 100mph in a 40mph zone, throwing glass bottles from the car, and driving towards oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road.

Officers were forced to abandon the chase due to the risk to the public and, instead, searched the area.

The car was found parked outside a house in Berridge Road and Bennett was discovered inside. The key to the Audi was also found and recovered from a toilet.

Bennett was arrested and charged the next day. He later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, and driving without a licence or insurance.

"Bennett drove so dangerously that evening that it was lucky no one was injured..."

Today, at Maidstone Crown Court, Bennett was jailed for 18 months and banned from driving for two years and six months.

Det Con Kara Sweetland, the officer in charge of the case, said: "Bennett drove so dangerously that evening that it was lucky no one was injured.

"He behaved with complete disregard for the safety of himself, the passenger in his car, officers and other drivers.

"Even though we had to abort the pursuit, prompt action by our officers meant we were still able to track and locate the Audi and bring Bennett to justice.

"Thankfully this result means he has now been taken off the roads of Swale and is unable to pose a threat to other drivers or members of the public."
