A person has been taken to hospital after a caravan was destroyed in an explosion at a holiday park.

Last night, fire and ambulance crews were called to Shurland Dale Holiday Park in Eastchurch, Sheppey.

Witnesses said a gas bottle caused the blast.

One man, who did not wish to be named, saw the blaze.

He said: "There was one guy that was in the caravan.

"He got out, lucky enough, before it exploded due to the gas bottles.

"Firefighters turned up pretty quick."

The man, who owns a holiday home nearby, arrived at the site, off Warden Road, just 10 minutes before the fire started.

He added: "I ran outside to make sure that no one was around the caravan or stuck.

"It's a good thing nobody was badly hurt but I believe there’s not enough done on the caravan sites to prevent this from happening.

"I did what I could to help but I didn't have enough fire extinguishers to even make a dent."

Another witness, who also did not wish to be named, became aware of the fire when their own caravan shook because of the explosion.

They said: "When the explosion happened my caravan shook, which of course made me go outside to see what was going on.

"There were a lot of people running away from the fire.

"Not only were the park staff amazing in dealing with the situation but I have to give the teenagers who were on site a nod.

"They were really calm and were assisting older people away from the area.

"It's not often that teenagers get a mention for something positive and I think that all of the young people at the park last night did an amazing job."

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews were sent to the scene of a caravan fire on Warden Road on Sheppey at around 10.45pm yesterday.

"Two fire engines attended, and crews used hose reel jets and a fog spike to extinguish the flames and prevent further fire spread."

South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) and Kent Police were also in attendance.

A spokesman for SECAmb said: "Ambulance crews, including our Hazardous Area Response Team, attended the scene.

"One person was assessed and treated at the scene for believed to be minor injuries before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital."

The holiday park has also been approached.
