Sheppey's summer carnival returned to the Island on Saturday, thanks to the Sheerness Town Team.

The town had not had a carnival since 2019 when the original committee threw in the towel after 17 years blaming apathy and rising costs.

The newly-formed Sheerness Town Council said it would fill the gap and created a pedestrian-only parade with no floats. Then Covid hit.

The baton was taken up by Phil Crowder who chairs the town team volunteers.

He said: "We thought Sheerness deserved a proper carnival with floats. I thought this was fantastic for a first attempt.

"We had 17 entrants including carnival queens from all over Kent.

"It was wonderful to see so many people lining the streets and bringing Sheerness back to life again. The town was heaving."

He added: "I'd like to thank everyone who took part and supported us.

"Next year, we'd love to see more floats and entrants from Island organisations, businesses and groups."

The day included a funfair in Beachfields around the sandpit and ended with a free fireworks display on the seafront sponsored by Tommy Holland.
