It has already been a record-breaking year for the Poppy Appeal on Sheppey.

Sheerness collection organiser Julie Austin-Williamson has banked £15,953 so far which has beaten last year’s total of £14,151.

Wreaths are laid at the memorial

She said: “Thank you to Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi for allowing use of their foyers and the volunteers because without them we wouldn’t be where we are and also to the public for their generosity and support.”

She put the success down to the First World War centenary and being allowed to set up a stall at Morrisons run by Mick Galvin, who oversees Queenborough, Minster and Halfway.

He has collected £5,567, while Peter Kearnes, who is in charge of Eastchurch, is yet to bank donations.

Anyone who would like to buy one of the 2014 pins or make a donation can call 07929 866010.
