There have been long delays this morning after police had to close the Sheppey Crossing.

Anyone driving off the Island was caught up in congestion at Cowstead Corner, as the bridge was coned off.

Drivers were diverted via the Kingsferry Bridge.

Traffic was queuing on the A249 near Neats Court and Lower Road.

The Sheppey-bound carriageway remained open.

A recovery truck was seen picking up a van on the Island side of the bridge.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to a report of a broken down vehicle on the A249 Sheppey Crossing at 7.20am on Wednesday 20 December.

"Recovery of the vehicle has been arranged."
