Four fire crews battled a huge factory blaze which sent clouds of acrid smoke over homes.

The fire broke out in Rushenden Road, Queenborough, on the Isle of Sheppey yesterday afternoon.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Services spokesman said: "Crews worked hard in extremely taxing conditions to extinguish flames which had taken hold of vehicles, gas cylinders and fuel oil containers stored in the premises.

"Main jets and high-pressure hoses plus a height vehicle were deployed to tackle the blaze, using compressed air foam to smother the fire."

The alarm was raised just before 4pm when smoke was seen coming from the building near the junction with Thomsett Way. Fire crews stayed at the scene until at least 9.30pm.

Police were also called and no one was injured, the cause of the fire has not yet been established.

Residents complained about acrid smoke drifting across their homes.
