Firefighters have been battling to secure the roof of a derelict water tower which became unsafe during strong winds.

Pictures show the crews outside the historic building in Trinity Road, Sheerness at around 5.20pm this evening.

A fire is not to be believed to be the reason for their attendance as it is thought they are instead helping to make the roof safe after being damaged during rough weather.

A spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of debris hanging from Sheerness Water Tower in Trinity Road.

“A fire engine and a height vehicle attended, and crews made the scene safe. There were no reported injuries.”

Delays were being reported for motorists along the road due to the incident.

The incident was called to an end by around 7pm.

It is not the first time the building has been visited by fire crews as in September 2022 it was the location of a huge fire burnt out the top floor overnight.

It has been unused for many years and was the focus of a controversial fundraising campaign in 2020.

The organisers looked to raise £1 million for its revival but were criticised by councillors.

Crews were also called to debris flying around during strong winds in Dover prompting concerns for nearby buildings and residents’ safety.
