Cannabis plants have been found inside an industrial unit following a fire in Queenborough on Sheppey.

More than 1,000 plants were discovered after police were called by Kent Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters were called to tackle a fire at a commercial unit in Rushenden Road at around 4pm on Wednesday.

But while at the scene, the crews entered a unit next door to check for fire damage and discovered a large-scale cannabis cultivation.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called and more than 1,000 plants in various stages of growth were found spread over two floors. Inquiries are now underway to identify those responsible for the cultivation."

An investigation has also been launched into the cause of the fire.

It is believed it may have been down to an electrical fault from extra electricity being used to harvest the cannabis cultivation.

Burned out remains of factory unit

The fire broke out in the 24/7 Transits industrial unit.

A workman in a neighbouring building used by Shearspeed Customs raised the alarm after seeing smoke coming from the roof.

Firefighters had to be wary of gas cylinders and oil tanks within the unit which was gutted by the blaze.

Part of the roof has collapsed after metal girders twisted in the heat and part of a wall also collapsed.

No one was injured.

An eyewitness said: "It was good it happened in the afternoon. If it had happened at night there would have been much more damage."

Clouds of acrid smoke also blew over homes in Queenborough.

Four fire crews were called to the blaze and remained on site until after midnight ensuring the fire was out.

Electricity to the units has been cut off.
